Farm Crew
Pay rate: $9 - $9.50/hour based on experience. Plus $0.50/hour end-of-season bonus for every hour you worked during the season.
Farm crew is a fantastic entry-level opportunity for applicants who are new to farming: it gives you the opportunity to work in the fields and in the wash station, to gain a lot of new skills, and to work with and learn from some very skilled members of our crew. This is where most of the work happens on our farm: from planting and weeding to harvesting and processing food in the wash station. Most of our employees are members of our farm crew and some with more experience take on additional responsibilities.
The farm crew is responsible for harvesting, usually daily, to fulfill commitments to CSA, restaurants, and farmstand as well as prepare for market. As a member of a harvest team you will:
· Work with your crew leader and the rest of your harvest group to efficiently harvest all the items on the crew leader’s list.
· Follow appropriate procedures for harvesting each crop.
· Be careful to protect harvested produce from sun, heat, and drying out after it’s picked.
· Do everything necessary to make sure our produce leaves the field in excellent condition.
Members of the farm crew will often work in the wash station to process harvested crops.
· Process crops in the appropriate order so that the most delicate produce is washed earliest.
· Become proficient in procedures for cooling down and/or washing each crop.
· Learn to process produce efficiently while still maintaining the highest quality standards.
· Learn to bunch, if you can! Bunching is one of the hardest things to learn on the farm and not everyone picks it up quickly. However, if you can learn to bunch efficiently and well you will be a much more valuable member of the crew.
In addition, members of the farm crew will accomplish other field tasks in accordance with their abilities and experience level. These tasks include:
· Cultivating with tools and by hand.
· Thinning direct-seeded crops.
· Trellising.
· Transplanting manually and using the water-wheel transplanter.
· Seeding manually (usually into plastic).
· Setting up irrigation.
Finally, members of the farm crew have the opportunity to work at some of our various distribution outlets. These include:
· CSA pickups. These are held three evenings each week, June through October, under the direction of the CSA Coordinator.
· Boulder Farmers’ Market. We would like all new employees to be available to work at least two markets every month so we can ensure adequate staffing. (It’s possible that we may not need your help for that many markets, we just need to be able to schedule you if necessary.)
