Employment Opportunities

Red Wagon Organic Farm is a fun, rewarding, and incredibly scenic place to work. However, the work is very demanding and requires commitment. We start work early in the morning, often at sunrise, and work throughout the day. You must be able to work long hours while still remaining motivated and having a good attitude. The work is physically demanding and must be performed under most possible weather conditions (i.e. heat, cold, sun, rain, wind, etc.) We have worked when it is 100 degrees outside and we have also worked in the snow. You must be motivated and able to work without direct supervision. You must also have your own transportation to and from the farm.

Harvest days are very important days on the farm and we need people who can show up reliably every day. We do not live on our farm, nor do our employees. This provides a unique challenge to have everybody show up on time every day. If you are not a morning person, a farm job is probably not for you. We start at sunrise and we work at a fast pace to get all the veggies harvested before the heat of the day. We then work for a number of hours at our wash area where we clean and bunch vegetables in order to get them ready to sell at market or to restaurants or our CSA.

Field work involves planting, weeding and irrigation. Mid-May through mid-June is a very busy time with getting seeds and transplants in the ground. The rest of the summer is spent tending to the crops—weeding, irrigation, and planting successions. The work can be physically demanding or tedious, but we try to have people work together if they want to in order to make it social and enjoyable. And there is always the incredible scenery and the many birds who visit our pond.

We often hire people who would like to make a career of farming, either as a farm manager or on their own farm. We are happy to show you as much as we can about how our farm works so you can apply it to your future farming business. We also hire people who don’t necessarily have farming in their future plans, but have an interest in agriculture and enjoy doing work outside in the summer.

Learning how to start a farm is very difficult and our goal is to produce a few farmers with new farms of their own.  We are slowly working on ideas to make this happen. We are relatively new to farming ourselves and are entering our 5th season. We have minimal infrastructure but have worked around this and focused on our strengths. Our farm has been incredibly productive with little more than some land and a tractor. We do not have green houses or refrigeration. However, we do have a new tractor and modern equipment. As the farmers we do not live on the farm site and neither do the employees. In the past we have shared any information with employees who have expressed an interest. This includes planting dates, varieties grown, financial information, etc. The financial information could be especially helpful to employees who are working on budgets to begin their own farms. Farm finance is a critical part of learning to farm. We have also encouraged our employees to participate in the planning and management aspects of the farm. We love farming, being outdoors, and growing organic vegetables. Some of the challenging parts are the planning, record keeping, bookkeeping, and marketing. However, these are essential skills that are critical to the success of a farm.
